Cloudflare Email Routing limits

Cloudflare Email Routing is excellent early-stage plumbing for custom-domain addresses that land in a personal Gmail inbox. It is easy to over-read what "free email on Cloudflare" means.

Included (typical free Routing)

  • Create addresses / catch-alls on your zone

  • Forward to verified destination inboxes (Gmail, etc.)

  • Optional workers for advanced routing (plan-dependent)

Not included

  • Outbound SMTP (you cannot "send as" through Routing alone)

  • Hosted mailbox storage / IMAP / POP

  • Google Workspace / Microsoft 365 replacement

  • Automatic Gmail Send mail as configuration

Implications for founders

  • Pair Routing (inbound) with ZeptoMail or similar (outbound human SMTP) and Resend/Customer.io (product lanes).

  • Org infra Pulumi can manage MX / related DNS when you opt into Routing, but address creation is often dashboard or Cloudflare API — treat it as ops, not app deploy.

  • Free Cloudflare accounts and personal Gmail do not give you admin-provisioned @company.com identities the way paid Workspace does.
