GCP project transfer
What landed
How to transfer a project from a personal account into an org in GCP. A how-to under Org infra, with a three-step diagram.
Why it exists
Free Cloud Identity organizations are hard to find. Most small teams create their first project on a personal account and inherit the mismatch later. The recovery path is not visible from the console. The page that offers the Project Mover role is the page where the grant has no effect.
The page documents two failures, because both cost real time.
-
A Cloud Identity organization cannot hold a personal Google account as a member. The account that owns the project can never receive a role inside the destination.
-
resourcemanager.projects.moveis an organization-level permission. The project’s own IAM & Admin page offers Project Mover, and a grant there does nothing.
The fix is one organization account with two grants on two IAM surfaces. Owner on the project, and Project Mover on the organization.
Language
Procedures follow ASD-STE100 in strict mode. One instruction per sentence, active voice, no phrasal verbs, 20-word cap. Explanatory sections use the STE-flavored mode, which keeps the structural rules and allows normal prose range.
